SPECIAL PROGRAM BY ORGANIZER

SPECIAL PROGRAM BY ORGANIZER Machining Extraordinaire

Japan’s manufacturing scene is facing an array of technical/engineering challenges of today as markets increasingly demand the adoption of high-mix, low-volume production, difficult and complex machining technologies, new materials, and micro-machining. How do industry players apply technologies they’ve accumulated over the years to satisfy today’s technological demands while setting themselves apart from their competitors?

MECT 2023 offers visitors the opportunity to see unique and highly advanced machining technologies that are rarely presented to the public under the theme “Machining Extraordinaire.” Machining demonstrations by three companies present clues to how industry players can satisfy demanding engineering needs, allowing for a closer look at the potential and future of machining.

Demonstration A
Precision grinding of large ceramic plates for more uniform and even surfaces

Cooperation FURUKAWA CERAMICS / OKAMOTO MACHINE TOOL WORKS

The demand for fine ceramics is expanding as semiconductor needs are rising. Today, they are used as raw materials for electronic products like smartphones as well as for products in the automotive, aerospace, and many other industries. Despite rising needs, fine ceramics are extremely difficult to machine or grind. A super large fine ceramic plate (φ800) will be brought to the MECT site to demonstrate the grinding process that achieves a more uniform and even surface than has ever been seen before.

Demonstration B
Life-size acrylic models of insects

Cooperation JP CUBIC / ROKU-ROKU SANGYO

Acrylic is considered one of the most difficult plastic materials to process because it easily chips or loses its transparency when machined. In the demonstration, you will witness life-size models of insects carved out of acrylic blocks. The faithful replica of an insect maintains superb transparency and mirror gloss while also being free of burrs. Don’t miss the opportunity to see this one-of-a-kind machining technique. Visitors can touch and feel the acrylic piece machined during the demonstration and see several types of acrylic insects.

Demonstration C
Dramatic time reduction in 5-axis machining with superior tool design

Cooperation ALFA TECHNOLOGY / YASDA PRECISION TOOLS / Tool provider OSG

Year after year, the types and number of parts most effectively manufactured through 5-axis machining are increasing. But one of the most common challenges of 5-axis machining is the long processing time required to achieve a smooth finish when machining complex parts with curved surfaces. For the demonstration, MECT designed an original part that can only be processed by a 5-axis machining center. An SME, which successfully and dramatically reduced processing time with a specially designed tool, will demonstrate its advanced technologies. Also, the optimal in-process measurement method installed in the 5-axis machining center and new machining methods that help reduce the roughing process significantly are introduced at MECT.
